GTM Engineering guide
How do you build a TAM map for B2B sales?
A TAM map is a qualified, enriched list of the accounts in your target segment, delivered to your CRM with owners assigned. To build one: define the segment and qualification criteria, source every candidate account, qualify each against the criteria, enrich the records, and send approved accounts to the CRM. Then make the process repeatable so the map stays current.

What is a TAM map?
TAM stands for Total Addressable Market. In B2B sales, a TAM map turns that idea into a working list: the specific companies that match your ideal customer profile, with the data your team needs to prioritize and contact them.
A good TAM map is not the biggest possible list. It is the list of accounts your sales team should actually work, qualified against agreed criteria and already in the CRM, so reps stop building their own lists by hand.
What do you need before you start?
- A clear target customer: industry, company size, geography, and any exclusions.
- Qualification criteria you can check with data, such as technologies used, hiring activity, or business model.
- The account fields your team needs in the CRM, agreed in advance.
- A sales owner ready to act on the accounts once they arrive.
How do you build a TAM map, step by step?
Step 01
Define one target segment
Write down the segment in data terms: industry, headcount range, geography, and exclusions. One clear segment produces a better first map than several vague ones.
Step 02
Source candidate accounts
Pull every company that could match from your data providers and databases. At this stage, coverage matters more than precision; qualification comes next.
Step 03
Qualify against your criteria
Check each account against the agreed criteria, using structured data and AI research steps where the signal is not in a database field. Keep a reason for every rejection so you can tune the criteria later.
Step 04
Enrich the approved accounts
Add the fields your team agreed on, such as company details, relevant contacts, and the signals that explain why the account fits.
Step 05
Hand off to the CRM
Send approved accounts to your CRM with duplicate checks and an owner assigned, so they appear where reps already work instead of in a spreadsheet.
Step 06
Make it repeatable
Save the workflow so you can run it again when criteria change or new companies enter the segment. A TAM map that is rebuilt by hand every quarter goes stale between rebuilds.
What are the most common mistakes?
- Chasing exhaustive market coverage instead of a qualified list the team can work.
- Qualification criteria that cannot be checked with data, so every account passes.
- Delivering a spreadsheet instead of CRM records with owners.
- No sales owner ready to act, so a good map sits unused.
- A one-off build with no reusable workflow, so the map decays.
Which tools are used to build a TAM map?
Most TAM maps combine a data orchestration layer such as Clay, several enrichment providers such as FullEnrich or Prospeo, AI models from OpenAI or Anthropic for research and qualification, and a CRM such as HubSpot or Salesforce as the destination.
Can TC9 build it for you?
Yes. TAM Mapping is one of the three packages in the GTM Launch Sprint ($6,500, fixed scope, delivered 30 days after readiness is verified). Source accounts in your agreed target segment, qualify them against your criteria, enrich the records, and send approved accounts to your CRM. Your team gets a repeatable process it can run again.
- One defined target segment.
- Agreed account fields and qualification criteria.
- A bounded initial run and a reusable workflow.
- One supported CRM destination.
For teams with a clear target customer and a sales owner ready to act on the accounts. Does not include bespoke scraping, exhaustive market coverage, outreach campaigns, or ongoing prospecting management.
Questions, answered.
What is the difference between TAM and ICP?
Your ICP (ideal customer profile) describes the kind of company you sell to best. Your TAM is the set of real companies that match it. A TAM map turns the ICP into a concrete, qualified account list.
How often should a TAM map be refreshed?
Whenever your criteria change, and on a regular cadence as companies grow, hire, or change technology. Building the map as a reusable workflow makes refreshing it a rerun instead of a new project.
Does a TAM map include contacts?
It can. The core deliverable is qualified accounts; contacts and lead lists are often the next step, built from the approved accounts.
Does TC9's TAM Mapping package include outreach?
No. The package delivers qualified, enriched accounts to your CRM and a reusable workflow. Outreach campaigns and ongoing prospecting management are outside its scope.
